I returned to Hong Kong after graduating from MICA. I am currently working as a secondary school art teacher, teaching pre-college art to students and continuing my artistic career. I used the Toby funds to exhibit my work in two international shows and to travel to Liste Art Fair in Basel, Switzerland where I installed my MICA thesis work in the 2P Contemporary Gallery. This was the first time Liste Art Fair included a Hong Kong gallery. It was very exciting. This generous grant has made it possible for me to gain a better understanding of what it means to be working as a professional artist. It has allowed me to continue to exhibit my work and participate in the commercial art world.
Progress Report: Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship
There is nothing I enjoy more than listening to family stories. It was the stories and secrets of my own family that made me curious about the people around me. I decided this year to focus on a story that has always been a mystery to me - my father's parents. My grandparents met during the Vietnam War. I composed a video of their life together with documents and narration to piece together what I did not know. Had it now been for the Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship, I would not have been able to dream this big. It has afforded me the opportunity to think beyond my usual methods of telling stories.
