3RD ANNUAL / MA in Critical Studies Symposium
The Walters Art Museum
Narratives of Modernity, Contemporaneity, and Desire is a symposium devoted to a consideration of important points in our cultural past and present, with the aim of better understanding critical discourse in the arts and, more generally, the world around us. How have artists, writers, and activists employed narrative strategies in creating particular effects, or achieving certain goals? And how, in the process, has their work contributed to or challenged notions of modernism, history, and humanity?
A series of 20-minute talks will be followed by a keynote lecture by the poet and actor David Yezzi, as well as a summary discussion of the symposium's theme.
Social Design Exchange
Instead, we, the MA in Social Design Class of 2015, are dedicating our collective energy to support current efforts across the city. Our class has spent this year working to understand social justice issues in Baltimore. We recognize that now is a crucial moment for action.
Many of you are already actively involved in this work, and we are humbled and inspired by you.
For those who are interested in learning more, offering support or taking action, we have assembled a list of resources below.
We are still eager to share our individual thesis work with you, and will do so at a later date.

Free TICKETS to screenings w/ MICA ID
Events and screening locations on Campus will be in Brown Center Atrium and Falvey Hall, Gateway BBOX and the Lazarus Center Auditorium.
The Film Festival’s Tent City will be in the Lazarus Center East parking lot (the lot nearest Maryland Avenue). The East Lot will be closed Wednesday, May 6th through Monday, May 11th.
The Lazarus Center West parking lot (by Joe Squared), the Falls Road Parking Lot, and the new Maryland Avenue parking lot will remain reserved for the MICA community. You must have a valid MICA parking permit to park in these parking lots. In the Maryland Avenue lot, you may only park in spaces marked "MICA." Please see the attached updated Graduate Parking Map for parking lot locations.
Because of MICA’s involvement with the Film Festival, you are entitled to a free ticket to any screening at any Film Festival venue with a valid MICA ID as long as there is available seating. You may use your ID to see one or many films. This offer excludes Opening night, closing night and the 7PM screenings in Falvey Hall on Friday & Saturdaynight. We realize that this is a very busy time of year for you, but hopefully you can take the time to see a movie or two in what promises to be a great festival.

#PirateRadio is an experimental and interdisciplinary performance using installation, movement, spoken word and sound. It is the most recent approach of artist Shola Cole's work Jenny.Was.A.Pirate.Hater reflecting on her personal experience, history's pirates, their turf and working collusions with slaves during the Golden Age of Piracy and the Atlantic Slave Trade.
Part talk show, part installation and full homage to the works of artists Nina Simone, Sparrow, Brecht, Kurt Weill, Lotte Lenya and Kathy Acker and others, #PirateRadio features Cole's time traveling alter ego Pirate Jenny and fellow collaborator and sound artist Mark Gunnery. Highlighting Baltimore based activists and artists against a backdrop of ambient sound, topics and conversations will revolve around historic pirate and slave interactions in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay area, with room to discuss those dynamics locally and nationally in the 21st century.

The rise and fall of Richard Florida's Creative Class — a critique and reflection by community organizer Dominic Moulden on the role of the arts and the evolution of a community's local economy. A conversation to discuss the development of Latin American female leaders in Southeast Baltimore, where 30% of the community is Hispanic. Maria Gabriela Aldana invites women of Hispanic descent with multiple identities and races, to speak about how we identify ourselves, or not, to obtain power. We will discuss opportunities, competition amongst ourselves and how we can support one another through unity. Workshop is FREE and childcare is available. The POWER Speaker Series addresses the concept and reality of "power” — that which impacts us all…all over the world. This 15-week investigation provides a uniquely civil, yet “aggressive” investigation addressing a myriad of power-related topics, issues and perspectives. Hosted by the MFA in Community Arts at MICA PLACE at 814 North Collington Avenue in East Baltimore, everyone is welcome to contribute as part of this inclusive set of discussions.

Taha Heydari’s works deconstruct the process by which media images, most associated with the Middle East, seduce the unwary into joining violent groups. The particular fluency of Middle East radicalism in the use of such methods has made the phenomenon a universal concern and Heydari explores the esthetic terrain of their propaganda. Heydari was trained in the art of miniature painting in Iran. He brings his highly-sensitized eye to the glossy post-modern palette of images generated by electronic screens, today’s equivalent of recruitment posters. He harvests into collages the kind of morally toxic, deceptively banal, visual junk that feeds the region’s wars with subliminal messages. Always ambivalent, suggestive, mysterious, his works invite the viewer to decipher, to look again and see the shiny visual poison at work, the slippery image-seduction of propaganda. In short, he asks us to be conscious of the process.
