CALL FOR PAPERS
The 3rd Annual MA in Critical Studies Symposium
May 2, 2015 at The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore A series of 20-minute talks will be followed by a keynote lecture by the poet and actor David Yezzi, as well as a summary discussion of the symposium's theme. Graduate students from other institutions are cordially invited to present their thesis work relating to these ideas. Please send abstracts of no more than 250 words to Avery Brow (abrow@mica.edu) by March 10 for consideration. | Narratives of Modernity, Contemporaneity, and Desire is a symposium devoted to a consideration of important points in our cultural past and present, with the aim of better understanding critical discourse in the arts and, more generally, the world around us. How have artists, writers, and activists employed narrative strategies in creating particular effects, or achieving certain goals? And how, in the process, has their work contributed to or challenged notions of modernism, history, and humanity? |

In this incisive and original study, critic David Balzer travels through art history and around the globe to explore the cult of curation–where it began, how it came to dominate museums and galleries, and how it was co-opted at the turn of the millennium as the dominant mode of organizing and giving value to content. Thursday, March 12th
7 - 8:30 pm
Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA)
Falvey Hall, Brown Center
1301 W. Mount Royal Ave.
Baltimore, MD 21217In a changing world, everyone designs. Each individual person and each collective subject - from enterprises to institutions, from communities to cities and regions - must define and enhance a life project. In this framework, Ezio Manzini's new book distinguishes between "diffuse design" (performed by everybody) and "expert design" (performed by those who have been trained as designers) and maps what the latter can do to trigger and support meaningful social changes.
For more than two decades, Ezio Manzini has worked in the field of design for sustainability. Most recently, his interests have focused on social innovation, a major driver of sustainable social change. He is the founder of DESIS, an international network of schools of design specifically active in the field of design for social innovation and sustainability.
