Graduate Research Development Grants - Proposals Due 2/17
Graduate Research Development Grants are designed to further research and creative projects. Grant recipients can win up to $500. Funding for these grants are made possible through the Office of Research as well as the proceeds collected through our annual MICA Masters Art Sale, a sale of graduate student artwork in the spring.
All MFA, MA and Post-Bac students are eligible to apply!
Possible funding categories include:
- Travel to research collections, archives, performances, exhibitions, conferences or residency programs in the United States or abroad (Preference to applicants with invitations from a sponsoring organization or institution to present or participate in residencies, conferences or exhibitions)
- Travel and participation in specialized training, workshops and seminars to enhance skills and qualifications
- Purchase of supplies, services, small items of equipment to complete the research or creative project

In today’s multifaceted and competitive business environment, any product or service worth its price begins with market research. In this six-week course, students will learn basic marketing principles and qualitative and quantitative research methods. Topics include research planning and design; how to analyze and interpret results; and how to apply research to business decision-making.
CSPD 252A: Small Business Basics [1.5 credits]

Running a small business is a 24-7 job that requires understanding and applying key business practices to succeed. In this six-week course, students are given a basic overview of how to create and operate a small business. Topics include parts of a business; types of entities; small business models; basic taxes, accounting, and finance; and contracts and intellectual property.

The Empathy Project
Paul invites you to contribute your writing, artwork, or proposals to The Empathy Project. You can submit anonymously. Stories and artwork will be shared. A full schedule of activities and programming including moderated and community discussions will center around these action areas: engage… perform… listen… write… collaborate… and install… Already, students and faculty have responded to this call with proposals for meditation, screenings, lectures, sculpture, and performance. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to use the space of the gallery for discussions, meetings, or classes. Although there will be artwork in the gallery at the start of the exhibit, the exhibit will change and grow over time.

1/31: Framing Workshop
PART 1 will take place in the Graduate Studio Center Wood Shop Jan. 31 from 3:30 – 6:30. This portion will cover the milling of dimensional wood materials; offer an in-depth look at the tools’ functions, adjustments and jigs, along with a variety of joinery and assembly methods. Through this informative step-by-step break down one will gain a deeper understanding of the design and creation of traditional gallery style frames, box mounts and shadow/light boxes used for the presentation of finished artworks.
PART 2 will take place at Full Circle (33 E. 21st Street) Feb. 1 from 9-5. This day long workshop will cover framing practices, design concepts, archival materials & techniques, and fine art presentation. This is a comprehensive workshop aimed at informing attendees of the many methods for preparing one's work for exhibition and for sale. Demonstrations will include traditional framing techniques like over-matting as well as newer techniques such as box mounting and acrylic face mounting. Attendees will have the opportunity for hands-on participation. As incentive, all students participating in this workshop will receive 20% off of all framing materials for their thesis projects at MICA, as well as a discounted day rate for working at the Full Circle Studio to complete projects.

The Baltimore Art + Justice Project in MICA’s Office of Community Engagement is building an interactive map of people, projects and organizations that are operating at the intersection of art and social justice in Baltimore. With searchable profiles, “Continuum of Impact” videos, impact research and a blog, the project seeks to support increased collaboration between and among artists and advocates in Baltimore. issue 2 | summer 2014
fields magazine is now accepting fiction, poetry, and visual arts submissions for our second issue. There are no style, length, or genre restrictions, and you may submit more than one piece for consideration. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify us if the pieces under consideration are selected by another publication. All submissions should be accompanied by a brief biography. The deadline for submissions is April 15.
